Does Liberty REALLY Matter?
This is a crucial time for our Liberty. We have recently witnessed the biggest economic disruption in the history of the world, and almost instantly seen the United States Constitution eroded in a way that threatens every Liberty we have so long taken for granted. The time for vigilance of our Liberty has become even more important.
Liberty is a powerful concept. It affects everything that happens to you and every choice you have the ability to make. It affects the way you raise your children, the place you live, the daily freedoms you do or do not have, and your ability to fulfill your God-given Kingdom purpose. Liberty affects everything and everyone. Every decision you make either leads you toward greater liberty or toward bondage.
What is Liberty? “Liberty is the opportunity to make a choice to assume responsibility and accept the consequences.” Liberty is a God-given idea placed within the heart of all peoples. As the people in this Nation have looked to civil government as their source, we have lost many of our essential Liberties.
Liberty entails responsibility. You cannot be dependent on someone else and free at the same time. Control follows money. He who pays controls. If you want to pick the restaurant for dinner, just say you are buying and everyone will be happy to eat where you are paying.
Some believe that the civil government owes them. They want the handouts without any strings attached, yet all government money comes with strings attached. This entitlement mentality takes away a person’s freedom to determine their own destiny. Whoever controls the money controls everything else. If you want to control your own destiny, then you must control your own money and not be dependent on anyone else.
Taking from the rich and giving to the poor is considered normal in our society. However, government redistribution of wealth is a fundamental belief of communism. Therefore, it cannot be a principle of Liberty.
The instability of recent days is a clarion call for everyone to get informed about Liberty. Most Americans would tell you they are still free. And even though we still have more freedom than most countries of the world, we have exchanged many of our Constitutionally-guaranteed Liberties for the illusion of safety and protection.
Rights come from God and not civil government. Our external civil Liberties are the result of applying the Bible to all areas of life. Our essential Liberties are now at the greatest risk they have ever been since the founding of the United States. As the “Nation’s expert on the principles of Liberty,” my purpose is to help you see that the only solution to the current crisis is to restore our Nation to the Biblical principles of Liberty.
Liberty is like Air
We all take air for granted. Fortunately, most of us do not have to think about breathing. The only time we think about breathing is when it becomes challenged in some way. If the challenge is because our air from outside is polluted and our body is gasping for clean air, we either need to change locations and find clean air or we have to filter and remove the contaminants from the air available. Another challenge may be if our lungs are not working correctly -- they are restricted from within in some way and, in that case, we have to do something to make our lungs healthier. Regardless of whether the challenge to our ability to get the air we need comes from within or without, there is a limit to how long we can continue with a compromised air supply.
Liberty is like air -- it becomes restricted from within or polluted from without. It can be restricted from within when we don’t value Liberty nor do anything to preserve or protect it. It can become polluted from without by destructive ideas that are the enemies of Liberty. We can continue living for a time but eventually, without a good pure supply of Liberty, we become less productive, less able to move around and less healthy. Liberty is like air -- you need it every minute of every day to live the best life possible.
Liberty is like Water
You could live possibly as long as 40 days without food. You can only live about 3 days without water. In many parts of the world their water supply is polluted so that, even though they have access to water that is necessary to save their lives, at the same time, that same water could contain organisms that could kill them.
You may have never thought about this before, but nations that have more Liberty become more advanced. One of the ways of helping a culture advance is getting to it a clean water supply. People cannot function at their best when they are sick with cholera and other water-borne illnesses. All that suffering, pain and death is preventable; yet people continue to suffer and die.
The reason is not a lack of water purification technology. The reason is not a lack of intelligence or lack of desire on behalf of the peoples of these different regions of the world. The political unrest, lack of governmental structure and stability and lack of economic prosperity, caused by years of ignoring or being uninformed about the principles of Liberty, has put many mothers in an untenable position. Their children must have water to live, but they cannot help but wonder if this drink of water could kill the children they love so much. No one should ever be in this position.
Liberty is like water because either the ideas that lead to Liberty are kept pure and passed on to the next generation or Liberty is lost and has to be regained. Did you ever see an old wild west movie where there were water wars? Water in the wild west meant life or death. People would go to extremes to protect their water interests. In an attempt to drive a sheep herder out of cattle country, mean ranchers would pollute the water of the sheep herder. Without water for his sheep, the sheep would either die or have to be moved to save them.
Today there are idea polluters who are doing things more dangerous than polluting a few water wells. These people are polluters of the mind; and their goal is to make ideas that are in opposition to Liberty sound like good ideas and to get our entire culture to embrace these ideas willingly.
Hearing an idea frequently, from many different sources over a long period of time makes the listener think that idea must be true. We tend to embrace ideas with which we are familiar even if they are not true. The ideas of dependency on civil government, redistribution of wealth and lowering of our lifestyle have become diffused throughout our society and are taking their toll around the world. Liberty is fragile, valuable and requires eternal vigilance.
Without Liberty, what would YOU do?
Liberty is like the air and water which most of us have been taking for granted without realizing how polluted it has become. It is time for you to ask yourself the question: Without Liberty, what would I do?
The principles of Liberty are universal – they work in every country of the world and in all socioeconomic conditions. There is a direct connection between Liberty and resulting economic opportunity.
